T&J installs tank beer at Jamie Oliver restaurant, Barbecoa

T&J Installations has installed a tank beer system with a capacity of 750 litres at Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa restaurant in Piccadilly, London. The tanks have been purchased by Barbecoa, leaving the restaurant owned by the hit TV chef, free to choose the beer stored inside.

Barbecoa made the decision to have tanks installed ready for its launch earlier this year, to serve lager from the Freedom Brewery, based in Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire.

Barbecoa is billed as ‘the home of smoke and fire’ and, as this suggests, the restaurant utilises methods of cooking on open flames with coal and wood. This style of cooking originated in the Caribbean and gave rise to the term ‘barbecue’. Housed in a stunning grade II listed building, formerly home to the ‘Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours’, Barbecoa serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, cocktails and dinner in a 250-cover restaurant.

T&J’s works at the restaurant included the installation of three 250 litre tanks, pythons, two cooling systems – one to chill the tanks and one to chill the pythons that carry the beer to the taps – air compressor, and the six taps and hand pulls.

Kenny Brownlee, Bar Manager at Barbecoa, said: “The tanks are performing really well. To have something special like this installed from launch was great.

“As summer gets into full flow, so is the beer. Sales of Freedom’s beer from the tanks are rising, and the feedback from customers is fabulous.

“T&J’s installation work was all done to a very precise schedule, integrating their install with all other fit-out works, in the run up to launch night. They worked alongside us in the planning of it all so that we had ‘no treading on toes’. Since then they have been on hand for any teething issues and the service – in terms of responsiveness and quality – has been superb.”

T&J has trained Freedom on the refilling of the tanks and on the management of the tank system.

Scott Eaton, Operations Director at Freedom Brewery, said: “We were delighted to have Freedom Organic beer accompany the food of Jamie Oliver and, with it being dispensed from tanks rather than bottled or from kegs, means that we’re delivering our beer at its absolute best to those visiting and dining at Barbecoa.

“T&J has been really helpful in terms of training our staff so that we can effectively maintain Barbecoa’s supply of our beer and correctly refill the tanks. The automation of the tank switchover and stock management makes the whole process very easy, both for us and the restaurant itself.”
