The Tap at No. 76 - micropub

Micropub

T&J installed the beer dispense equipment during the fit-out of Tollgate Brewery’s second micropub, The Tap at No.76 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, setting itself apart from other new public houses catering for the ever-growing thirst for high quality ale. The location chosen by Tollgate for its first micropub in its local market town is a historic, Grade II listed property – bringing its own challenges.

In The Tap’s own words: “We’ve stripped back the gimmicks and distractions that have become standard practice in many pubs, reverting back to a traditional establishment that welcomes conversation in a comfortable environment, whilst having an eye for well-made drinks.”

Based on the Calke Estate, just down the road from the location of The Tap, Tollgate Brewery made the decision to invest in its micropubs following recent success in the trade sales of its cask conditioned real ale.

Requirement

From the outset, the micropub was intended to sell a range of Tollgate Brewery beers, available both on tap and by the bottle. T&J was charged with the task of installing beer dispense systems for both cask and keg fit-out that would deliver brewery fresh products to customers – emphasising the beer’s local origin.

Site assessment

T&J visited the site on the high street of Ashby De La Zouch to carry out a survey of the property, and assessed the bar and cellar space. As part of this process, T&J had to take into account the restrictions put in place by the building’s listed status – specifying to provide infrastructure for the install.

By carrying out this work, T&J identified the most appropriate configuration and layout to deliver the range of beers that Tollgate Brewery wanted to put on offer – 6 keg products and 4 cask products.

Installation

Dispense equipment was installed for both keg and cask and, since opening, the venue has experienced great success with a strong, positive response from the local community. Installation included bespoke, brushed nickel handpulls, which were specified by Tollgate and sourced by T&J, to be in keeping with the microbrewery’s ethos behind the venue and the venue’s own aesthetic.

Follow up

T&J has provided ongoing maintenance and is set to provide the same installation and maintenance services for a forthcoming additional Leicestershire location for Tollgate Brewery. T&J’s work for this microbrewery is just one example of the increase in demands for its services by the private sector and free trade outlets.

Client feedback

Kevin Elliott, Managing Director of Tollgate Brewery, said: “We’re delighted with the results at The Tap at No.76 – the bar looks excellent and the pub is finding its place amongst the local community.

"For us, real ale is about beer that has been produced using the best ingredients and techniques that enhance the flavour and experience, rather than extend shelf life. T&J was really on-board with these sentiments, and that was a key factor in selecting them to support our creation of the micropub and retaining them as technical services provider to maintain the premises’ provisions.

“The popularity of the venue in its first year has given us the impetus to open a second Leicestershire site, and we are now looking at locations near to Leicester. We look forward to working with T&J Installations on our next venue.”
